The book grew out of the author's love for textiles and design, her interest in history and the discovery of the rich and varied collection of needlework and textiles in the Friends Historical Library in Dublin.
Chapters include a brief introduction to Quakerism from a spiritual and historical angle. Emphasis on equality attached to the education of girls and many chapters devoted to clothing, furnishing and practical applications for sewing.
